Best Skin Care Tips for Men

Daily shaving can take a serious toll on a man’s skin-especially when you factor in the drying effects of winter weather. Check out our expert’s advice on how to keep your skin healthy, clean and moisturized.
FROM FIGHTING ACNE decades past puberty to scoffing at the first signs of wrinkles, it’s hard to win the good-skin game. But before you curse your genes, ask yourself whether your skincare routine and lifestyle habits are up to par. And by that we don’t mean clocking hours in front of the mirror or stealing your girlfriend’s fancy facial products.

1.Cleanse Your Skin

For most men, skin tends to get oily throughout the day in certain areas, even in winter. Excess oil can stick to the skin and block the pores, preventing your razor from gliding along the skin smoothly. So before you shave, wash your face with water and facial soap to make sure there are no blockages.
A daily skin care routine will benefit you now by keeping skin firm, clear, and bright. Things just get better years from now, when everyone else is starting to wrinkle and you’re not.

MORNING & NIGHT

Every morning, wash your face with a men’s facial cleanser that is made for your skin type. Cleansing first thing in the morning refreshes you by removing dull skin and impurities.
Before you go to bed, wash your face to prevent oil and other pore-clogging bacteria from sitting on your face all night.

2. Get Ready for Shaving

Before you pull out the razor, Ricci suggests splashing your face with warm water after you cleanse it, which will open up the pores. Then apply a light layer of pre-shaving cream, gel or mousse to keep the skin moist and warm. The smoother the skin, the closer the shave.
It's always best to shave in the shower or right after you step out—the heat opens your pores and loosens your beard. A 2007 study in the Journal of Materials Science revealed that moistened hairs require 30 percent less blade force to cut than dry ones do. Minutes matter here: Stubble (and the skin beneath it) needs at least 3 to 4 minutes to absorb moisture. Less pressure means less pulling, which can reduce agitation of the hair follicle and create a cleaner cut along the middle of the hair. That translates to fewer ingrown hairs.

3. Multitask for a Better Shave

4: Minimize Wrinkles

Keeping your skin exfoliated and moisturized will do a lot to minimize and prevent wrinkles. The real key to youthful skin, though, is your diet (and hydration, of course).
What not to eat:
  • Cut back on meat and dairy products, which can age your skin. If you don’t think you’ll ever completely give up your “meat and potatoes” type of diet, you don’t have to. Just eat less meat (no more than once per day), and look for grass-fed, organic options.
  • Skip coffee and caffeinated tea because they can dehydrate your skin, among other problems.
  • Sugar and artificial sweeteners. Use Stevia or raw honey instead.
  • Fried foods.
What to eat more of:
  • Cabbage. It contains tons of vitamin C and some vitamin A, too, both of which help erase lines. It also detoxifies the blood and the fiber helps push waste and toxins out of the body. Too many toxins in your body can actually show up on your face, making you look older than you are. Try eating some raw sauerkraut before dinner a few times per week.
  • Eat (or drink, in your GGS) pears to get rid of nasolabial folds. Just be sure you use organic pears and eat the skin, since that’s where most of the anti-aging nutrients are.
  • Watery vegetables or fruits help with hydration, which in turn will make your skin look more youthful and radiant.

5. Choose the Right Razor

Razors can be single- or multi-blade. If you like to spend as little time as possible shaving, you can go for a razor with three or five blades. The important thing to remember is that you should be comfortable with your razor and not apply too much pressure, as this can cause irritation.

6. Take Your Time

Skin gets damaged more easily if you make swift movements with your razor or apply your creams too quickly. Give yourself enough time to shave in the morning and allow a few minutes between washing, applying pre-shaving cream and shaving.

7. Use Moisturizer Day and Night

Applying moisturizing cream to your skin day and night will keep it hydrated, allowing for a smoother shave. Moisturizing will also help prevent cuts and irritation. Look for moisturizers with natural hydrating ingredients like vitamin E, shea butter or essential oils.
